Do you need to cause a good impression when taking your guests out for the first time in Parma?
One of the most well known restaurants in Parma, Sorelle Picchi was established in 1973 by the three sisters Flora, Teresa and Cristina Picchi. For over 47 years this place has been a reference for traditional food among locals and tourists. Located in an elegant downtown area on Strada Farini, this place is ideal for entertaining clients or to have a romantic dinner “al fresco” during a summer evening. The menu and the good quality of the food is still the same since the first time I was taken for dinner at Sorelle Picchi in 2012. Even the waiters – who are kind if fluent in English – are pretty much the same. There are, obviously, other good restaurants in Parma, but this one is very convenient for its location. A few blocks down the road you have many interesting options for an “aperitivo” before dinner, and maybe a gelato after dinner on your walk back to the hotel. I don’t recommend driving to this area as parking is hard to find, parking spots are narrow, and at approximately 4 blocks away.
If this is your first time in Parma, I suggest you start by trying their prosciutto crudo, salame, coppa, and strolghino (on the menu they call L’oro di Parma) as well as the famous parmigiano reggiano pianura, montagna and vacche rosse (on the menu Verticale di Parmigiano from the mountains, prairies and red cow). For a taste of the traditional filled pasta, I suggest their Tris di Tortelli erbette, zucca, verdi (herbs, butternut squash and spinach). In case you feel like trying one more course, than Osso Buco di Vitello in Gremolada (veal shank) is an excellent choice. Wine? Well, the house Lambrusco is an interesting option and not so expensive. Alternatively, order one of my favorites for Euro 40/bottle: Franciacorta Saten.
